It tells about energies to be invested in this current life, and our past life expertise. Our life revolves around this axis. It’s a big dilemma in one’s life.
Understanding Rahu
- Rahu is the north node of the Moon and is often referred to as a shadow planet. It represents the bodiless head of a demon, with Ketu being the headless body of the same demon.
- Wherever Rahu is placed in your chart, it indicates the areas of life where you are meant to invest your energy, grow, and ultimately master those domains.
- In the early stages of life, Rahu often manifests as anxiety, fear, and frustration in those areas, as it embodies immature energy. In your past lives, you may not have acquired the necessary skills or experience in those areas—either because you bypassed them or failed to handle them effectively. This lifetime, however, is an opportunity to refine and improve those aspects of your life.
- The degree of immaturity in these areas will depend on Rahu’s placement in specific signs, degrees, conjunctions, or aspects to other planets. If Rahu is well-placed, it may indicate that you already have a strong foundation of expertise in these areas from the start, and you will continue to refine your skills as you move through life. However, if Rahu is poorly placed, it suggests that you have not gained experience in these life areas from past lives. This can lead to significant initial challenges, including anxiety, fear, and a sense of being overwhelmed.
- But in both cases, as the person ages and Rahu’s energy matures, they will eventually become good at it.
- Rahu also represents obsessive energy. So, at some point in life, the person will become obsessed with these fields and will gain a lot of fame and success. They will eventually become a master of these domains.
- Since Rahu is considered an inter-caste planet, the person will have wild, unconventional ideas about the domain and follow a non-traditional path. People may not appreciate this approach in the beginning, but with time, they will recognize the person’s greatness.
- However, because Rahu is a malefic planet, it creates illusions and false impressions. When the person starts working in their Rahu domain, they may develop false pride or ego. Even if they’re not yet very good at it, they will feel they’ve become the best and take pride in it. Eventually, the Ketu energy will kick in, leading to a downfall and a reality check. This brings them back to the lower energy of Rahu—fear, anxiety, and depression.
- Take the example of Donald Trump, who has Rahu in the 10th house and Ketu in the 4th house. The 10th house represents career, while the 4th house relates to home, personal comfort, and emotional security. With Rahu in the 10th house, he’s given very unconventional and sometimes bizarre ideas when it comes to his career, particularly in politics. Initially, people opposed him strongly, as they were not accustomed to his approach. But over time, they began to understand the brilliance behind his unconventional ideas. This Rahu placement ultimately shaped him into one of the most impactful leaders, with a remarkable list of achievements.
I think of Rahu energy as an axis that moves from immaturity, fear, and anxiety to obsessive working energy, eventually leading to mastery in a particular field.
I define the stages of Rahu energy in a house as follows:
- Stage 1: Immaturity, lack of ideas, fear, anxiety, depression, and a tendency to escape from the field.
- Stage 2: The field starts to seem interesting, and the native begins to engage with it.
- Stage 3: Obsession with the field develops, along with the creation of wild and unconventional ideas surrounding it.
- Stage 4: The creation of false impressions and an inflated sense of pride, along with a tendency to show off excessively.
- Stage 5: Ketu energy kicks in, bringing a reality check with some destruction, which pushes the individual back to Stage 1.
- Stage 6: The lessons from pride and failure are learned, and the person progresses through the stages from 1 to 5. This loop continues until the Rahu-Ketu axis matures fully.
- Stage 7: This stage typically comes later in life, often after the age of 45. The person has now mastered the field and is ready to share their legacy. They become a living master, teaching their knowledge to others or using their proficiency for the greater good.

If we study this graph closely, we’ll notice a yellow line, which acts as a baseline in someone’s chart, representing the maturity the person has gained in this field from past lives.
- Rahu’s placement will depend on this yellow line, showing how much experience and maturity the person has in the field from previous lives.
- The slope of the increasing black line will depend on time periods like Mahadasha, Antardasha, and transits. If the timing is favorable, the person will excel and experience a strong learning curve. However, when Ketu energy kicks in, the slope will go downwards to a level much lower than the previous stage.
- It might not be a straight line, but rather a non-linear curve, with increasing or decreasing tendencies (those who have experience reading graphs will understand this well).
- We can see many possibilities on the curve, based on different time periods.
- No chart is the best chart, and ups and downs are a universal truth in anyone’s chart.
- Astrology helps us understand these time periods and prepares us mentally for what’s to come.
- If a challenging time is approaching, we know from the past that we need to put in more effort to achieve certain results. This way, we can start working harder as the situation demands, otherwise, unknown obstacles may block us.
- Astrology helps us plan our life events based on the past. If a bad time is coming in the finance domain, for example, we can prepare by saving more, spending less, or taking fewer risks.
- We are not robots. We have free will, unlike the program that runs only in a robot. Humans have our own programs (the planet’s game) running in our life’s computer, and we’ve been blessed with free will. Therefore, our life is like a function of free will and those hidden programs.
- Enough of “Gyan”, let’s get back to the Ra-Ke axis again
We have seen that the Rahu-Ketu loop constantly plays out in someone’s life. With each progressing loop, it’s meant to get better, and the maturity of the planets should increase. However, if the chart’s situation is unfavorable, each loop could cause the person to be severely affected. In such cases, strong mentorship and guidance are necessary.
Furthermore, the level of immaturity in the Rahu-Ketu axis depends on the placement of the planets in the chart. No work done is ever lost, as Krishna says in the Gita. If you’ve reached a certain level of understanding in a past life, you will start from that exact level of expertise in the next birth. This is the gift Rahu-Ketu brings us.
Understanding Ketu
- Ketu is the south node of the Moon and is a shadow planet, much like Rahu. While Rahu is the head of the demon, Ketu is the headless body. The ultimate goal in life is to unite Rahu and Ketu in one house, a concept that can be seen in the higher divisional charts like D60. These higher divisional charts delve into the depths of the subconscious mind and reveal deep karmic patterns accumulated over countless lifetimes.
- Ketu represents past life experiences in a chart and shows our expertise in certain life domains we’ve acquired from previous lifetimes. The sign and house Ketu occupies, along with its planetary conjunctions, determine how this energy manifests.
- Since Ketu represents past life experience, it naturally gives us a sense of detachment from the house it resides in. This house is where we feel most comfortable, and we often try to stay within this comfort zone. However, Rahu’s energy pushes us out of this comfort zone, directing us toward the house where Rahu sits.
- Because Ketu represents past life expertise, we often feel unsatisfied with the success we achieve in that particular house. It’s like a saintly detachment—we accomplish things but don’t feel much excitement or attachment to them. This can be seen in many celebrities with this combination. They may easily acquire mansions, luxury cars, and other material wealth, yet once they have it, they often think, “Okay, that’s fine. What’s next? It doesn’t excite me much anymore.”
- Mahatma Gandhi, for example, has Ketu in the 11th house. This placement shows his past-life expertise in dealing with large networks of people, which allowed him to gain tremendous fame. Yet, despite his fame, Gandhi showed an aversion to it, and his mind remained unaffected by the recognition and attention he received.
- Wherever Ketu sits in the chart, it teaches us detachment in areas where we have past-life expertise. Ketu wants us to move toward Rahu energy. However, most people don’t understand this dynamic or the skills required to handle the Rahu-Ketu energy, and as a result, they find life more challenging.
- In the areas where Ketu resides, people often struggle to find success in the initial years. Only by working with detachment and aligning with Rahu’s energy can success truly unfold. This is particularly difficult for someone whose Ketu is in the first six houses because maturity and life lessons, such as detachment, come only with age. The first six houses represent the early years of life, so those with Ketu in these houses may face more struggles early on. However, if they are drawn to spirituality from a young age, their life may improve.
- People often misunderstand detachment during their early years, leading to frustration in those areas of life. But who’s gonna tell them that the frustration they feel in the areas of Ketu’s influence comes from past lives where they mastered those fields. As they mature, they eventually experience great success in these domains.
- Therefore, it can be said that the energies of both Rahu and Ketu mature after the first half of life, and eventually, the person becomes a master in both fields. The individual uses the past-life experiences of Ketu to manifest their empire through Rahu’s energy. This is the ultimate life lesson that these planets aim to teach us.
- If we align ourselves to their plan, we will find life more easier.
